From the beginning, the head of the community was a Prioress, elected by the nuns for four years, who could always be re-elected.

In 1928, the community was raised to the rank of an Abbey. The nuns elected an Abbess for life, until 1982. From then, the Abbess has been elected for twelve years, and can be re-elected.

Abbess Edith Street was the first to be elected for a term of twelve years. She lived in the community in her retirement, and died in 2004.
